Kyle Lake

Many in the Emergent community were saddened to hear of the tragic death on Sunday of our friend, Kyle Lake.  Kyle was the pastor of University Baptist Church in Waco, Texas, an author, and a great friend of Emergent.  But, far more importantly, he was the husband of Jen, the father of three young children, and the friend of countless many. Jen's brother, Scott Gornto, is also part of the Emergent community. Please pray -- and ask your communities to pray -- for Jen and the children, for Scott and all of Kyle's friends and relatives, and for the entire UBC community.

Later in the week, we will publish some tributes to Kyle.  There will be a visitation in Waco at 6pm on Monday, and a memorial service at 10am on Tuesday.  In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorials be sent to UBC at 1701 Dutton Avenue, Waco, TX 76706.

Upcoming Events

From the beginning, Emergent has always been about relational gatherings -- to be honest, some of the events we plan are merely foils to get people together! Face-to-face, incarnational encounters are at the core of Emergent, and are merely supplemented by blogs, books, and cell phones. So, you might not be surprised that we are planning and dreaming about lots of events, some we're hosting, and others that we want you to be aware of because they're being hosted by our friends. So, here we go:

Events that Emergent Is Hosting or Co-Hosting:
The 2006 Emergent Theological Conversation with Miroslav Volf: This event was previously closed at 115 participants (in less than 6 hours!), but due to popular demand, we've opened it up to a couple hundred more. I expect these spots to fill rather quickly. We'll be meeting with Dr. Volf, one of the preeminent theologians in the world, at Yale Divinity School, February 6-8. The cost is $115, which does not include food or lodging. We've worked out deals on the two required books with Abingdon and Zondervan, and you'll get info about that after you register. Find out more and register here.

Round Barn Retreat: An Emergent Women's ReGathering: Using a barn-raising metaphor, interested women are gathering for a spiritual barn-raisin' of sorts, April 29-30, 2006, at the Round Barn Inn Bed & Breakfast in McCordsville, Indiana. The weekend will include sharing histories (joys and pains), envisioning a structure or community that opens up and supports our experience of God and participation in God's on-going creation, and then "raisin' that barn!" The hope is to produce a publication by and for emergent women as well as a solid network for communication and community. The weekend will include quiet prayer times, times of dialogue and discussion, and an evening time of sharing our gifts, graces, passions, and expertises. Cost is $75 which includes three meals, but does not include housing. Registration is limited to the first 50, but if the response warrants, a second event is already being penciled in. Register (not available quite yet!) through emergentvillage.com. For more information or questions, please contact Rev. Liz Buxton or Elizabeth Potter.

Towards an Embracing Community: Race, Ethnicity & the Emerging Church: Limited to 100 participants, this is a symposium, an event that will both investigate ethnic diversity in the emerging church, and envision a way forward, a way that promotes an "embracing church." It will be held at North Park College and Seminary in Chicago, Illinois, May 18-20, 2006. The cost will be $85, and we are looking for one or two organizations that believe in the importance of this conversation and would be willing ot underwrite it. Registration is not yet open, but if you have questions or ideas, you can email Jay Voorhees or Susie Albert Miller.

The Emergent Theology/Life/Leadership Institute: This will be a series of seminars, classes, and experiences that will take place over two weeks, June 12-23, 2006, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. You can come for three days or stay for the entire two weeks. Seminars will be offered on holistic living, faith and quantum physics, relational theology, youth ministry, and the doctrine of creation, among other things. Registration will be open in early January.

The Gathering: Once again, in the Fall of 2006, we'll be gathering in Glorieta, New Mexico for our un-conference. No paid speakers or bands, no agenda, no conference notebook. It's more like a family reunion, rife with organic conversations that ebb and flow through the days. For many, this is the highlight of the year.

Events that Emergent Is Dreaming of:

The Emergent Writers' Summit: In collaberation with our new book-selling partner, Viva Bookstore, we hope to host a summit for writers in San Antonio, Texas in the next couple years. Fifty writers would be invited, as well as a collection of publishers, editors, literary agents, and others in the field.

The Emergent Festival: We've been dreaming of a big-top, blow-out event in 2007 for many months now, and it's beginning to take shape. It looks like it will happen in the summer of 2007, in the middle of the country, in a field somewhere. Stay tuned...

Events that Emergent Wants You to Know about:

The 2006 Environment and Worship Conversational Gathering: Hosted by Kevin Callahan and featuring Rex Miller and Sally Morganthaller, in Scottsdale, Arizona on February 7/8, 2006. More info here.

The National Pastors Convention: Held in San Diego, California, February 22-25, there will be an "emergent track" including an 8-hour critical concerns course featuring several Emergent-types. Info here.

Do You Listen to the Radio?

Would you be interested in an alternative to the monopoly of conservative Christian talk radio?  How about a station that featured programs hosted by Tony Campolo, Brian McLaren, Jim Wallis, Bob Edgar, Doug Pagitt, and Tony Jones?  How about programs that looked at issues from a progressive, emergent perspective?

Well, our friends at the Christian Networks Journal, an award-winning nationwide quarterly magazine that provides balanced and in-depth discussion on current issues and faith, is in talks with satellite radio about creating a new type of Christian talk station. The satellite radio providers have said they love the concept and will add it to their line-up if we can prove that people would listen to it. If you are someone that is under-served by traditional conservative Christian talk radio, but would listen to Christian talk radio if there were an alternative (which was balanced, in-depth and progressive), this is your opportunity to make it happen! If so, please click the link below to sign our petition. In this way, you will help prove to satellite radio that a market for this type of talk radio exists. The quicker we can do this, the quicker the station can be on the air!

Glorieta Bloggers

by Will Samson

There were a lot of bloggers at this year's Gathering, many of whom are or soon will be blogging about the event (I am way behind myself). Here is the list of bloggers at the Emergent Gathering 2005:

Hopefully I got everyone's information right. If you want to correct anything on this list, or if you were there and somehow got left off this list, please email me. Thanks!

Hopes And Dreams of Emergent

by Will Samson

While I was at Glorieta for the Gathering I hosted two conversations, both entitled "The Hopes and Dreams for Emergent". I wanted to know why people had bothered to travel to the Gathering, why they identified with Emergent and what they hoped for the future of Emergent. The answers were not surprising, although the strength of the answers was.

One of the most significant reasons for people participating with Emergent was to find friends as that person journeyed in the mission of God. Some people felt as if they were in liminal space, somewhere between where they had been and where God was taking them. Others felt as if they have left some place permanently and were seeking friends and companions as they journeyed on. People really felt passionate about joining with Emergent as a way to create friendships for living out the mission of God. This came out as the strongest theme of both conversations.

One of the interesting aspects of this conversation is that is spoke to a belief I have long held about Emergent. There were at least two distinct groups who participated in these conversations. One group was asking the questions "What is God doing in my context?" and "How can I be a part of that?" Another group was asking "How can I be more effective at _______", with the blank being filled in by some version of what they saw as their distinct mission.

This fills me personally with a lot of hope for Emergent. Some people are looking to this conversation to make them more effective wherever God is calling them, and that's great. While Emergent is not a resource provider per se, I am delighted that folks asking that question felt comfortable identifying with the larger Emergent conversation.

The others, who made up the majority of both conversations, are asking questions of contextual theology. This is what really got me excited. This is how I came to be involved with the church that is emerging, by reading authors like Lesslie Newbigin and David Bosch. By being willing to ask what God was doing today and how I might join that.

Speaking of "the church that is emerging," Brian McLaren mentioned that this might be a better title than "the emerging church." I like that because it connects deeply into the Church at her root rather than speaking of the work we are participating in as some new expression.

I will be hosting a forum on the hopes and dreams of Emergent over at The Ooze. Please feel free to stop by and continue this conversation!

Announcing the Emergent Logo Contest

As we sign publishing contracts, develop websites, and think about business cards and stationary, it’s become clear that we need something to identify Emergent. Instead of hiring a graphic designer, I figured there are lots of people out there with a fondness for Emergent and a deft hand at design. So, if you’re one of those, why not take an hour or two to design a logo for Emergent that incorporates the word, “emergent,” and email it to me. I’ll narrow it down to four or five finalists (with some help from persons more savvy than I), and then we’ll posts the finalists on the website and have an online poll to determine the winner. Hey, you might have your design work splashed on book covers and websites for years to come! But, aside from the notoriety, the winner will receive a free, all-expenses paid trip to the Emergent Gathering in 2006 (okay, the Gathering is already free, but we’ll pay for your travel and food!). Deadline for entries is October 31, 2005.
