Tony's exactly right, I think. The downside of having open, unmoderated, unregistered commenters is that people are not required to take responsibility for their own opinions. Look at the number of anonymous/pseudonymous comments in this thread alone that are simply flames and not attempts at discussion or dialogue - it's not an environment that can promote the kind of discussion that it seems Emergent wants. I'm not sure how requiring someone to take responsibility for their comments through registration equates to fascism. Right now, the comments here are sort of like trying to talk in a pub where someone keeps yelling "FIRE!" every ten minutes or so.

I am curious as to whether the option of requiring TypeKey registration for commenting has been investigated - I haven't used it much, but wouldn't that allow the same level of moderation that a bulletin board would grant? It's a simple matter to activate - should be part of the settings for comment preferences.

fas┬Ěcism
1 often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
2 : a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control

Yeah...that's what's happening here...no doubt about it...

Can we maybe get some perspective? What do you all do when something REALLY bad happens?

horney toad you asked what i meant by Pagan (the way i use it requires a capital BTW) sorry this word ofen causes confusion on Christian sites as some use the term to mean 'someone who isn't a Christian'. I mean someone following a contemporary Pagan religious path like Druidry, Wicca, various forms of Shamanism etc. on the whole religious paths that connect strongly to nature and draw on mythologies from ancient nature orientated religions within a post modern religious context. that is very simplified but i hope it makes sense

Hey Tony,

I think that is the nicest thing anyone has said! I do have a brain! Seriously though, I see your point and understand it completely, which is why I wonder if both options should be made available. Then again, I can see how this could still scare, hurt or dissuade the entry level explorers.

As I said, I am already signed up at TheOoze and will continue to visit. I am slowly learning the ropes of the board, which will help in the adjustment.

In the end, I return to my earlier comment. Perhaps my reaction is due to the FEELING that we are losing a favourite hang out. With further THOUGHT, I realize that this isn't the case and better digs are being built for more to enjoy. Good on yeah!

Peace,
Jamie
